Farewell and thanks to Peter Selby

As 2017 comes to an end and the DEC officially transitions to the NIHR Leeds In Vitro Diagnostics Co-Operative (IVDC), we are also saying farewell to our Clinical Director, Professor Peter Selby.

Professor Selby was a major influence and provided unwavering innovative strength and strategic vision in the development of the NIHR DEC Leeds. Through his strong leadership and dedication the DEC flourished and reaped many notable successes over the four years it has been in operation.

Professor Paul Stewart, Executive Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Health, at the University of Leeds, said:

"The renewal of the NIHR MedTech and In Vitro diagnostic Co-operatives to the University of Leeds and our principal NHS partner, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, was a major achievement and thanks to all concerned. As Gordon Cook takes over the leadership of the diagnostic platform, there is a very special person to thank in this domain - Professor Peter Selby. For many years now Peter has brought academic excellence, strategic vision and, crucially important in this context, a series of industry/university/NHS partnerships together to deliver a truly outstanding research engine that will drive new diagnostic capabilities to the benefit of patients in Leeds and beyond. Gordon and the new team will have the reassurance that Peter will remain “in the wings” for guidance and mentorship, but for now a really big thank you Peter for all you have done. Very much appreciated”.

“We have been extremely lucky to have Professor Selby as our Clinical Director; he has provided the team with a clear vision of how the DEC could work with academia and industry to advance IVD research for the benefit of the NHS and our patients” added Dr Helen Radford, Operations & Scientific Manager, NIHR DEC Leeds.

Professor Gordon Cook will take over as Clinical Director of the Leeds IVD-C when it launches on the 1st January 2018. He said “It has been an honour and a pleasure to have worked with Professor Selby, whose continued mentorship will stand me in good stead. He has achieved so much with the DEC and this has laid fantastic foundations upon which I hope to build .”

Although Professor Selby is stepping down as the Clinical Director he will be joining the Leeds IVD-C Clinical and Scientific Advisory Board as Chair. We would like to thank Professor Selby for his guidance, leadership and counsel over the last four years and we are grateful he will still be part of the Leeds IVD-C.
