New Leeds Centre of Excellence in Digital Pathology

A new Centre of Excellence in Digital Pathology is to be set up in a partnership between Leica Biosystems and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust/University of Leeds and supported by the National Institute for Health Research Diagnostic Evidence Co-operative Leeds (NIHR DEC Leeds).

Leeds has well-established, world-class digital scanning facilities and has worked with Leica Biosystems for a number of years. Through this new venture the goal is to deploy and develop digital pathology on a large scale and to provide robust evidence of its clinical and productivity benefits.

“Digital Pathology has many benefits and it really is becoming an essential technology for a modern pathology service,” said Dr Darren Treanor, Consultant Pathologist and head of the Leeds Digital PathologyGroup. “We’re excited to partner with colleagues at Leica, who understand the complete lab workflow, from the histology workflow through to the imaging and slide review process. Working with Leica will help us realise the full potential of digital pathology, while meeting the needs of our researchers, pathologists and patients.”

Jerome Clavel, Vice President and General Manager of Pathology Imaging at Leica Biosystems, said: “We have a long history of working with Leeds and this announcement is a natural progression of our joint efforts thus far. With the help of Leeds’ experts we believe we can refine our solutions and roadmap for mainstream adoption of digital pathology.”
